Fall Reset

After the carefree days of summer, I am ready for a much-needed fall reset that goes beyond cozy sweaters and savory recipes. When the temperatures start to dip, my focus tends to shift from hours spent outdoors to hours spent indoors, preparing my home for the upcoming fall and winter months.

Today, I did a deep dive into the organization of our home and our lives. Admittedly, this wasn't what I had on my agenda for the day. One task just sort of flowed into the next, like a page from the children's book,

"If You Give a Mouse a Cookie". This need to get my house in order started out small, with a calendar of all things. As I jotted down future appointments and projects into my new 2027 calendar, I instantly felt certain elements of routine falling neatly into place.

This feeling soon snowballed from updating a calendar to updating certain areas of my home, as well. The simple act of putting laundry away suddenly turned into a project as I began decluttering our bedroom closets of anything that was too big, too small or just plain tired. From there, I decided to switch out the cotton bedding of summer for the flannel sheets of fall. Next, came the bathroom closet. I went through the OTC medications, checking the expiration dates for everything from eye drops to cough drops. I even made a list of the items we needed to replace as well as those items we needed to stockpile, such as Kleenex.

As the day came to an end, I felt a sense of accomplishment. Granted, adding dates and organizing closets doesn't have the same visual pay-off as repainting a room or landscaping the yard. However, getting my home and life a little more organized held its own kind of pay-off. Oftentimes, it's the things we do behind-the-scenes that have the greatest impact in helping our lives run more smoothly.
